North Backyardistan, commonly called the Sovereign Principality of North Backyardistan, is a micro-nation enclosed by the City of Lincoln, Nebraska in the United States.

Politics

Although North Backyardistan is commonly referred to as a principality, it is actually a voluntary proprietorship. The principal officer of government is therefore not a prince and is instead styled "Lord Proprietor."

North Backyardistan is governed according to an Austro-libertarian conception of private property rights and market-based provision of all goods and services. It is officially stateless.

Geography

North Backyardistan is comprised of a .11 acre residential property with a small house and detached garage. It is in the South Bottoms neighborhood of Lincoln, Nebraska.

It is contiguous with South Backyardistan, with which it enjoys an open borders agreement.

Culture

North Backyardistani people enjoy performing music with a variety of stringed instruments, including violins, guitars, mandolins, and ukeleles.

During the summer months, music-making opportunities often spontaneously arise outdoors, usually in collaboration with South Backyardistan. Participants often wander between the north and south at will.

The formal open borders policy between the two nations is the pragmatic consequence of this custom, as during its observance border enforcement would be a practical impossibility.

Economy

The North Backyardistan economy is almost entirely service-driven. Primary market clusters include legal services and higher education services.

The national tree is the Paw Paw (Asimina triloba), and its fruit is the sole agricultural product of North Backyardistan. However, the entire annual harvest is consumed domestically; none is marketed internationally.

There is a small output of walking sticks and other wooden products made from Osage Orange (Maclura pomifera), as well as other crude folk art, but this activity appears to be wholly recreational and non-remunerative.

National symbols

The most prominent national symbols of North Backyardistan are those featured on its national flag.

  • The starry plow and pole star symbolize the North.
  • Their gold color is a reference to the strict 100-percent reserve gold standard.
  • The black field represents the stateless legal order.
  • The white field represents peace and the open borders policy enjoyed with South Backyardistan.
  • The Paw Paw tree situated on the white field is symbolic of humility, cooperation, and plenty. (The national Paw Paw tree itself is situated near the southern border.)
